A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Afakole Ijogi has urged Iyorchia Ayu to resign as the national chairman of the opposition party in fulfilment of the promise he made in 2021.
Ayu promised that he would quit office if a northerner emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
Ijogi, who hails from Benue State, said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Thursday, September 1, 2022.
In addition, he said that the PDP was built on the principles of justice, equity, fairness and inclusion.
According to the party chieftain, it is unfair for the party’s presidential candidate, national chairman, and board of trustees chairman to be from the North.
There has been crisis in the PDP since after the presidential primary where Alhaji Atiku Abubakar emerged as the presidential candidate of the party.
Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State and his camp insist that Ayu should resign for a southerner to be the party’s national chairman for fairness and inclusion.
Ayu in a response to the demand of Wike’s camp said he will not resign from his position unless Atiku Abubakar wins the general election in 2023.
On Thursday, Ijogi while speaking on Channels Television said Ayu promised to resign from his position if a northerner emerged as the party’s presidential candidate. He urged the chairman to fulfil his promise as soon as possible.
