The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has earlier today gifted each of the Rivers United FC players $20,000 for clinching the Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL 2021/2022 title.
Wike had earlier promised the players if they would lift the trophy that he would change their lives.
The state government organized an epoch-making reception in honour of the team in the heart of Port Harcourt, the capital city.
In his speech, Wike dished out #$20,000 for each player for winning the title for the first time. They won the title from the defending champions, Plateau United.
The club’s forward Chijoke Akuneto, the club’s forward with 19 goals emerged top scorer.
Apart from the financial gift, the team shall also enjoy a two-week training tour at Madrid in Spain prior to the resumption of the new season, 2022/2023.
Furthermore, Governor Wike has also upped the morale of the players by promising to double the reward ($40,000) if they qualify for the next CAF Champions Season.
As history would have it, no Nigerian club has ever won the CAF Champions League title aside Enyimba winning it in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
