Governor Wike Declines Meeting With Atiku Over Choice Of Running Mate

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has refused a request for a one-on-one meeting with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and former vice president Atiku Abubakar to discuss the ongoing controversy over the choice of running mate.

Since Atiku chose Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election, the PDP has been entreated in serious crisis.

According to reports, some members of the party are now demanding for the resignation of its national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, as a result of the issue.

Wike, who came second in the party’s primary election, urged Atiku on Tuesday to meet with his team for peace talks on the terms proposed for the party, particularly in regards to Ayu’s resignation.

Senator Walid Jibrin, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), reportedly offered that Atiku lead a reconciliation team to Wike, but Wike indicated that he would rely on the advice of the “Strategy Team.”

Wike, who denied a one-on-one meeting with Atiku, claimed a lack of confidence in any personal arrangement with Atiku.

A source stated, “There is no possibility of Wike having a private conversation with Atiku.”

He was astonished that Atiku had not informed Nigerians of what transpired between him and Wike after the primaries and how he came to choose Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate. “

Since there was no full transparency, Wike has mandated that any new discussions with Atiku be conducted by his strategy team, who will provide him with advice.

Regarding what transpired between Atiku and Wike, the source stated, “After the euphoria of winning the primary, Atiku visited Wike to solicit his support. “He promised to make him a vice presidential candidate, Wike stated that he is not interested in the position but that Atiku should choose former Governor Donald Duke. Atiku and his supporters convinced Wike to be his running partner.

There was significant pressure on Wike to accept the offer.

Later, the party leadership established a kangaroo committee (of which Ayu was a member) that stated the party could only nominate three candidates for Atiku to choose. And Wike and his crew were well aware that there was a prearranged nominee.

In conversations, insincerity and lack of faith are readily apparent. This explains why Wike closed the door on Atiku. “
