Despite the cracks on the walls of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), the dogged comrades and youths of Ijaw nation have continued with the protest undeterred, after the elapse of one month ultimatum to the federal government to set up a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).Just hours from this much talked about protest, president of the Ijaw Youth Council, Dcn Peter Timothy Igbifa was kidnapped by unknown gunmen, whose whereabouts is unknown even till this moment of the protest. In the absence of the president, the protest being led by council Secretary General, Hon. Frank Pukon today frowned at federal government’s refusal to constitute the board for NDDC. The protest is currently going on in Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Abuja and other major cities in the country. The protest according to him Pukon became inevitable to get the attention of the international community to the President Buhari-led Federal Government of nepotism and negligence to the plights and yearnings of the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was purposely established as an interventionist agency on development of the region with finances accrued to the Commission but it seems it has derailed from its purported objectives. The Forensic Audit was inaugurated because of mismanagement of the commission’s finances in recent times but till this very moment, it has not yielded result. Ijaw Nation and the entire Niger Delta Region has lost confidence in the forensic audit.Senator God’swill Akpabio is believed to be responsible for the delay in constituting the substantive board for NDDC. He had on different occasions reneged on his promises to constitute the board, but rather promoting interim administrations, and presently Sole Administrator. The Federal Government should therefore do the needful so that it will not ensnare the long existing peace in the region to avoid shutdown of oil facilities and others.
