Opeyemi Olatoke, a 20 year-old girl was locked up in a house for five years by her father at Alfa Fire Area, Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria.The father of the girl, Mr. Samson Olatoke was arrested for allegedly locking up his 20-year-old daughter for five years. The government of Osun State and the Nigerian Police have rescued the said Ms Opeyemi Olatoke from the dejected settlement.
Mr. Samson Olatoke alongside his son have been arrested by the police in connection to violation of Human Rights.
On Monday, the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Barr. Olubukola Olaboopo in her press statement made available to the press by Oyedele Kehinde, her Media Assistant popped that the matter was reported to her office by a Non Governmental Organisation which goes by the identity, “Value Female Network”. According to her, “The ministry and the police swung into action, we went to the house where the 20-year-old girl was locked up by her father. The father disclosed that he locked up the girl because she was physically challenged. The victim’s mother informed us that Opeyemi’s health started to deteriorate when she shouted from her sleep at age four and since then she was lame.”
While speaking further on this issue, Barr. Olaboopo urged parents to take good care of their children, saying parents who are found maltreating their wards will be dealt with according to the Laws of the State.
Dr Aderibigbe, the president of the NGO, ‘Value Female Network’ when asked about the source of information leading to whereabouts and the subsequent rescue, he explained, “An anonymous source disclosed the information to our organization that a man had locked up his physically challenged child in an abandoned family house for five years in Ikirun, adding that the father of the child only feeds the girl once in a while.”
Since the incident was made known, the Osun State government has taken over the responsibility of the girl’s wellness and medical care while the father is to face the dictates of the Law.
